General Rules of the Road…

Bicycling Rules

Always ride with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road. However, never ride between two lanes of traffic moving in the same direction unless one lane is a separate or mandatory turn lane. You can pass other vehicles, but only do so when is safe and remember you can pass in the same lane, change lanes, or ride off the road if necessary for safe passing. Just keep in mind motorists’ blind spots and that you might not be seen if you’re passing on the right. Also, new law, you can now ride two abreast on state and local roadways! Kids 14 and under must wear a helmet and everyone riding at night must have working front and rear lights. Use hand signals when turning and bells/voice to signal pedestrians when passing.

Motorist Rules

You must approach/pass a bicyclist at a reasonable speed and change lanes to pass. You also may not cross a solid line into a bike lane to pass another vehicle and if you are street parking, don’t open that door into traffic unless it’s safe and clear.

Other ways to stay safe & responsible

If using headphones while biking, keep one ear free. Dress appropriately; bright reflective clothing, helmets, closed toed shoes, are all a good idea. If you ever feel unsure or unsafe in a traffic situation, walk your bike. Always park your bike so you are not blocking or impeding sidewalk, doors, and emergency lanes or access. And always lock it up!
